AWIS WOOL MARKET REVIEW

Week Ending 18 January 2019 (Week 29)

Sales continued on a positive note when the AWEX EMI finished 13˘ higher (+0.7%) in Australian currency and 3˘ higher (+0.2%) in US currency at sales in Sydney, Melbourne and Fremantle this week.

51,703 bales were on offer nationally, compared with 47,593 bales last sale.  6.7% of the offering was passed in.

It was the largest sale of the season; and the first time 50,000 has been exceeded.

AWEX reports that the value of the wool sold was $101.2 million ($2,098 per bale), taking the season total to $1.737 billion ($2,227 per bale).

The sale opened in Melbourne alone on Tuesday, when there was an easing among the Merino types, but further strong gains among the fine and medium crossbreds.  Wednesdays sale produced good all-round results, apart from some mixed outcomes at the fine end of the Merinos.  There were further good gains among the fine and medium crossbreds.  The sale closed on a steadier note in the East on Thursday, but on a stronger note in the West, where the WMI finished 9˘ cents higher than on the previous day.

The average closing average AWEX crossbred MPGs were up by 68˘ at 26 microns and by 56˘ at 28 microns on top of their gains of 55˘ and 33˘ in the last sale.

The US Exchange Rate finished 0.33˘ (-0.5%) lower to close at 71.52˘ on Thursday.

Buyers for China were dominant, with support from buyers for Europe and India.

Looking ahead, offerings for the coming three sales are expected to come back from the higher numbers of the past two weeks.   Quantities are currently expected to range from 37,005 bales to 41,503 bales and to be 4.3% less than in the same period last year.  The forecast progressive difference to Week 32 is -15.6%.
